Hartford Technologies manufactures high volumes of precision hollow
steel balls for a broad range of applications. Hartford's hollow steel balls
are widely specified for applications that require weight savings, corrosion
resistance or flotation. Stainless hollow steel balls are also an excellent
replacement for hollow plastic balls. Stainless steel balls are stronger than
their plastic counterparts, and provide excellent corrosion resistance.
In addition, the properties of stainless hollow steel balls allow for the
replacement of plastic balls where magnetism is needed.
Common applications include liquid float systems, conveyor systems,
palletizers, overflow and vent valves, and ball transfer units.
The weight savings inherent in hollow steel balls makes them an excellent
choice for the ball transfer units used in material handling, cargo shipping,
assembly, and other applications where loads must be transferred smoothly,
and with minimum deviation. The hollow ball takes the place of a solid ball
and provides a significant weight savings. As one example, a hollow ball
weighs 44 grams less than a 1” solid ball, providing a weight savings of
more than 65%.
Hollow steel balls are highly effective in valves: their low specific gravity
allows them to float, and, when needed, act as a seal against a seat.
The primary material used for hollow steel balls is 440A.
The composition of 440A is as follows:

General Specifications for 1" size ball are as follows:
Material: 440A
Size: .994"
Diameter Tolerance: +/-.006"
Roundness Tolerance: 0.0004"
Hardness: Rockwell 52-56
Wall Thickness: .070"
